Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Ron Valle Photography

Red Hot Chili Peppers broke out in the alternative music scene twenty-eight years ago. Let that sink in, twenty-eight years ago. There are very few bands that are still relevant after that amount of time. The band is older of course, but based on the show on Friday night at U.S. Bank Arena, you would not guess it. Anthony Kiedis obviously works out and his voice is still spot on. While Flea bounces around the stage like a… well a flea.

My favorite Red Hot Chili Pepper album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik was represented well. I was ecstatic to hear my favorite, “Sir Psycho Sexy.” Back in the day, my friend Kelly and I would walk the streets of our hometown singing those lyrics (we had no clue how dirty they were). The band did a good job of blending in older hits with tracks from their newest album, The Getaway.

A crowd highlight was “Californication.” It started off with Flea and Josh Klinghoffer jamming alone on stage for a couple minutes. Slowly, Chad Smith joined in with Kiedis following. Air guitars were out in the crowd in full force.

While most of the crowd were hoping that they would bust out their legendary tube socks, they did not. However, Klinghoffer did rock a Cincinnati Reds hat. We’ll take it.

For the encore, Flea walked out on stage on his hands. He exclaimed to the crowd, “Thank you for your kindness. We are so fucking grateful for you.” Thanks Flea. We are grateful for YOU.
